Q&A: testing before outpatient surgery for fibroadenoma?

Question by slightlyconcerned: testing before outpatient surgery for fibroadenoma?
Im going to be having a simple outpatient surgery to remove a fibroadenoma from my breast. Im supposed to be going to get testing done though before to make sure im healthy i guess? my question is, if i have done coke twice (small amounts) within the past 2 months and smoked weed (very occasionally) within the past 6 months, will they deny me the surgery? Does this show up during testing?

Answer by Yvette C
They will not be doing drug screening. If you are to have general anesthesia, they will probably do an EKG (heart testing), CBC (blood count), Chem 7 or 20 (electrolyte test of blood), and urinalysis to make sure your kidneys are working properly. But if you have smoked weed and done coke, please be honest with the anesthesiologist when he comes and interviews you and asks you questions. These drugs and the smoking of anything need can interfer with your anesthesia, so your doctor who puts you to sleep must know. He will only use this information to make sure you are safe during the surgery and for no other reason, so you can tell him, he won’t call the law on you. Good Luck And I forgot, they may get a chest X-ray on you too.

When a person has a Fibroadenoma lump inside their breast is the breast sometimes red on the outside ?

Question by Lisa: When a person has a Fibroadenoma lump inside their breast is the breast sometimes red on the outside ?

Answer by Gymnast8168
Yes it is. I had a Firoadenoma lump that I had removed a few years back. I first noticed when it was small, thought it would go away. But then it got worse. My skin turned pink and warm to touch.

In sense it is something the body is trying to fight off, irritating the tissue, making the skin appear red in color.

Hope this helps!

Well if your doctor is the one who advised for surgery, then obviously he/she feels that you can withstand the surgery.

If you have any questions, you should really ask your doctor as they have more knowledge on the subject and know your personal health history better than anybody here.

Can you breast feed with a fibroadenoma?

Question by Another baby boy!: Can you breast feed with a fibroadenoma?
Is it safe to breast feed with a fibroadenoma and will it interfere with milk production if it’s not removed?

Best answer:

Answer by ilse72
Yes, you can safely breastfeed with a fibroadenoma. It poses no risks to your infant. These growths usually do not interfere with milk production or breastfeeding.

Please be aware though that your fibroadenoma may enlarge during pregnancy and breastfeeding but this is totally normal! The growth is stimulated by the increase in your hormone levels.

Q&A: What will the doctor do to determine whether I have fibroadenoma or not?

Question by blank: What will the doctor do to determine whether I have fibroadenoma or not?
I am 19 years old and I have what I think is a fibroadenoma in one of my breasts. I went to an OBGYN today who didn’t seem to know much and referred me to another doctor/surgeon (?). The OBGYN also recommended having it surgically removed. I was wondering, do they actually have to surgically remove it to really tell what it is? I have heard of something that has to do with a needle, and I was wondering how exactly that procedure worked. I have an appointment for next week but I wanted to get some information beforehand so I can be prepared.
What is fine needle biopsy and how does it work?
ONE MORE QUESTION: If they do cut it open, is it going to leave a scar?

Best answer:

Answer by szubudaj
you will most likely undergo a procedure of fine needle biopsy….to diagnose the mass in question…..not to worry too much!

fibroadenoma breasts

From surgery in September 2010.

Sorry for the slightly awkward angle. I realized I never posted a picture of my surgery site without the bandage. Sorry if this is slightly gross.

UPDATE:

I had surgery back in September for a breast tumor; it was benign, called a fibroadenoma. Unfortunately I just made another appointment with my oncologist because I have another breast lump. Recently (actually well before the September surgery) I lost about 12 pounds in 2 weeks but I more related that to going out with my new boyfriend, because I was sort of shy around him. I think I will mention it this time however considering if I don’t eat in one day I can loose up to two pounds. I haven’t been able to get that weight back and weigh at any time between 95 and 101lbs, before I was about 115lbs. Also mentioning to my doctor (Dr. David May) I am rarely TRULY hungry, and rarely do eat along with my lethargic nature lately. I tend to think about it a lot, and I don’t really speak to much people about it in person.

So my appointment is on Valentines day, I trust Dr. May greatly. He performs ultrasounds in his office and usually determines the route of action we need to take that day.
