Surgery on 9/22/10
fibroadenoma breasts

On 9/22/10 I had to get surgery to remove a tumor to have it biopsied. I had to go under full anesthesia of propofol and lidocaine for a local anesthetic. It took about 7 days for me to get the biopsy results at my recheck appointment and it was determined that it was a benign tumor called a fibroadenoma. It was slightly painful and more painful than I originally thought but this was mainly because my body had reacted to the absorbable sutures and bandage, I was also quite nauseous because of the anesthesia, but that was minimal and at times when I forced me self to do things. I made three attempts to go to work and one attempt to go to class but as soon as I get to work/class I felt so sick and painful I had to leave.

I have absorbable sutures and they can take up to 4 months to fully absorb. At my recheck appointment the surgeon told me that he didn’t like how the surgery incision looked because it was more raised then he would have liked, mainly because my body had reacted to the sutures. He then advised me simply to put an antibiotic ointment on the site, which I have been doing. I only wear a bra when I am going out into public, i.e going to the mall, and these only cause my site to get more inflamed and puss filled. About three days ago I had to wear a bra to class only to come home to a puss filled, inflamed incision. This then needed to be cleaned and scrubbed. Myself, along with my boyfriend, are keeping an eye on it and thoroughly taking care to reduce infection.

In times like this I am really thankful I have someone like Adam to take care of me when I feel and look like shit, this experience has made me fall even more in love with him.

I’ve had this tumor for about 6 months and I went for a ultrasound of it in February, and the doctor wrote on the report that he did not see anything on the ultrasound. Which of course couldn’t be more false and if this tumor did come back to be cancerous I’m sure I would’ve gone a route of malpractice lawsuit against this doctor. This doctor was very ignorant to me and couldn’t seemingly care less about my case. He stated to me at my appointment that "I was fine, and could go home" so of course having a doctor say this to me I was relieved but still skeptical about his actual report. Thus then about 6 months later at my OB/GYN visit I informed my OB again and she immediately referred me to a breast specialist and surgeon of Dr. David May. Dr. David May was a wonderful doctor and he made me feel completely comfortable. Dr. May preformed another ultrasound on me and then it was determined that I needed surgery, and thus I had surgery!

So that’s my story, summed up as much as I can.

Mucinous Breast Carcinoma

This lesion, clinically thought to be a fibroadenoma, fell apart into pieces during excision. I toyed with the possibility that it could be a myxoid fibroadenoma, on account of the lobular pattern seen on low power. However, immunostains for p63 and myosin showed no evidence of a myoepithelial layer around the nests of epithelium floating in the mucin.

Cancer Awareness Month

April is Cancer Awareness Month, and I would like to bring awareness to breast cancer.
About three months ago I found a lump in my breast. Thankfully I have some education in the medical field and judging by how it felt (round, firm, rubbery, painless, and free moving) and that it had well defined round edges, I figured it was nothing more than a benign tumor. But I got it checked out anyway, of course, and after a couple of doctors visits and an ultrasound it was later ruled out that it was a fibroadenoma. Physicians are unsure what causes fibroadenoma, but when I felt mine I was going through a very stressful part in my life so I would like to think that may have played a role in this tumor developing. Fibroadenoma are common in young women, and can be either removed or, like me, be left in and be check regularly by a doctor. I am very thankful that all it was was a benign tumor. Although it may increase my risk of developing breast cancer later in life.

So to all you ladies (and gentlemen)
Do you regular self exams! Thats how I found mine, and if it isn’t a fibroadenoma and something more dreadful, early detection is the key to beating the disease.

Oh and by the way, I feel like I have to say this: In my case, you cannot see the tumor so it doesn’t deform breasts whats-so-ever.

www.balancedhealthtoday.com www.balancedhealthtoday.com ” * If you have a lump in your breast, your doctor will check for the following: o Fibrocystic changes: Fibrocystic changes, previously called Fibrocystic Disease, are the most common benign or harmless (does not threaten health or life) condition of the breast. Changes can occur in one or both breasts, most commonly in the upper and outer sections. You may feel a thickening of the fibrous tissue that supports your glands. Common lumps, called fibroadenomas, occur during the reproductive years. They feel rubbery and movable. They often occur with fibrocystic changes. o Cysts: Breast cysts are fluid-filled lumps. They can be tender, especially before your period. * Breast cancer: Some lumps may be cancer. Breast cancer is usually associated with the risk factors of age, genetics, or hormones. About 75% of breast cancers occur in women older than 50 years, 23% occur in women ages 30-50 years, and 2% occur in women under 30 years. o Genetics is believed to play a role if your mother or sister (referred to as first-degree relatives) were diagnosed with breast cancer before menopause. You have a two to three times higher risk than the general population of developing breast cancer. o Hormonal factors may play a role. If you have had the following conditions, you may have an increased incidence of breast cancer (possibly because of longer exposure to a hormone called estrogen). + Had your first period at an early age + Had

What is the chance that a surgically excised breast fibroadenoma will recur?

Question by medstudent: What is the chance that a surgically excised breast fibroadenoma will recur?

Best answer:

Answer by health_avenger
Hi
Fibroadenomas may recur if the conditions that gave rise to them in the first place continue to exist.

For example, it is thought that fibroadenomas may be estrogen-related. So if a woman with fibroadenomas is “estrogen dominant”, she might consider: reducing her weight, reducing dietary animal fat (especially from sources that put hormones in the feed) and seeking treatment with progesterone. If she is on birth control pills, she might consider changing her dosage or her brand, or getting off of them altogether.

I may have a Fibroadenoma of the breast, which is a usually benign tumor in the tissues?

Question by tattooraven1: I may have a Fibroadenoma of the breast, which is a usually benign tumor in the tissues?
It has been causing me a lot of pain and tenderness (apparently due to its location), but the OB/GYN tells me it does not necessarily need to be removed. I was wondering if anyone else had a Fibroadenoma that was associated with pain and breast tenderness, and what course of treatment they decided to take (i.e. wait and monitor the lump or have it removed). Thanks!

Answer by mommyO2
I had one and my ob refused to remove it also so i went to a breast specialist she did a biopsy and found it was just a fibroadenoma and removed it although they aren’t cancerous they can be very painful mine was right at the bottom and my bra constantly rubbed on it they can also grow with hormone changes mine grew when i was pregnant. i would recommend getting a second opinion. i am so glad i got mine out it was so painful.

Fibroadenoma removal after breast augmentation. Will the removal of a Fibroadenoma affect my silicone implants?

Question by CG: Fibroadenoma removal after breast augmentation. Will the removal of a Fibroadenoma affect my silicone implants?
I had breast surgery done about 9 months ago. Now I am going to get surgery to get a Fibroadenoma removed. It has been biopsied and it has been confirmed that it is Fibroadenoma and I want to get it removed. I am afraid that the removal will cause my implant to rupture or move. Should I be concern? My implants were done under the muscle.

Best answer:

Answer by Mirmir78
Not to worry I have had SEVERAL of those removed. Its not going to effect your implants at all since they were done under the muscle. They are going to make a small incision and most likely the lump will be pretty close to the surface as most Fibroadenoma’s are. You might be in slight pain but everything will be ok.

Q&A: plz help….I have Breast lumps & cyst (fibroadenoma) on both breasts!!!?

Question by Melinda: plz help….I have Breast lumps & cyst (fibroadenoma) on both breasts!!!?
I had benign tumour in my right breast when i was 14 years old, I had it removed and I’ve been going back for checkups once every year, last year they found 2 lumps again in my right breast i did a biopsy and they took a sample and found that it was fibroadenoma, benign again and the Dr said they usually go on their own and there is no need for them to be removed surgically.

I had a breast ultrasound this morning as i do every year before i see my Dr and i had the ultrasound results back and they found that i have 4 lumps and 1 cyst in my right breast and 1 lump and 1 cyst in my left breast, i’m very scared, i’m seeing my doc tomorrow but i just can’t wait, has anyone had this probs with their breasts before, and how were they removed, in addition i just had my periods last week and my breasts get swollen when i have my periods so could all those lumps be caused by my breasts getting swollen during my periods

some people just have alot of fibrous tissue like that. Don’t worry until you have reason to. I have had both cysts and fibroadenomas removed- only because they were large and uncomfortable. (removed under local anesthetic, and it did not hurt, but was very sore the next few days!!!) I was told by the doctor that you can leave them if they don’t hurt, and just monitor them. Hormones can cause them to get larger also, but I don’t think they can CAUSE them per se.
